I noticed that NL5 lets me specify a negative inductance. If I place a -1nH inductor in series with a +2nH inductor, will it simulate a +1nH inductor?

Yes. It actually does not care, is it positive or negative: it's just solving differential equations, regardless what numbers are there. That's why sometimes I call NL = "No Limits" simulation - you can set negative, zero, positive, and even infinite parameters almost for any component (not all though).

Recently one of LTSpice users blamed me (NL) for simulating circuits with "silly values": yes, that's exactly what NL is for.

That's great. Some of our more complex models require using a matrix of windings and inductors, some of which need to be negative in order to get total loop inductances to match finite element sims.

Just know that there is at least one user out there using some of that "silly" functionality.
